The Role and Responsibilities of the Integrity Officer (IO)
The role of the Integrity Officer (IO) is central to ensuring ethical conduct, sound governance, and regulatory compliance within an organization. Regulators expect Integrity Officers to operate with clear authority, independence, and professional judgment, supported by effective reporting lines and the ability to advise the Board and Supervisory Board.
In addition, regulators increasingly expect the Integrity Officer to play an active role in promoting integrity awareness, including providing integrity training during employee onboarding and ongoing training throughout the organization.
Why This Training Matters
Integrity incidents, such as misconduct, breaches of internal policies, or violations of laws and regulations, can have serious regulatory, financial, and reputational consequences.
Regulators expect institutions to demonstrate that:
- The Integrity Officer has a clearly defined mandate, advisory, and training role
- Integrity risks are identified, assessed, mitigated, and escalated appropriately
- The Board is properly informed, advised, and challenged on integrity matters
- Employees receive integrity awareness and conduct training
- Serious incidents are reported to the Regulator in a timely manner
This training helps ensure the Integrity Officer function is properly positioned, understood, and effective.
